Learn to forage for food, search of paku (jungle ferns), bamboo shoots and other edible jungle products found near the river. Fish for prawns in the small streams or set up fish traps in the Delok River. Use traditional jala (throw nets) to fish whilst or be assigned to collect firewood. In the evening under the glow of palm oil lanterns its time to take to the archery range for some healthy competition, spiced up by going head to head with local Iban trackers.
Day 1 – Arrive in Borneo
A relaxed day with a tour of historic Kuching. Discover the charms of this riverine city established by Sir James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak. You will see buildings dating back to the days of the White Rajahs, ancient Chinese temples and shops displaying the produce that first brought traders to Borneo. A relaxed evening and welcome dinner.
Day 2 – Into the Jungle
Journey to the starting point for your jungle adventure. Board an Iban longboat and travel upriver to your first jungle lodge. Settle in to the jungle lodge before dinner, followed by a visit to the nearby Iban longhouse.
Thursday 30th December - Day 3 - Jungle Run & River Race
After an early breakfast, hike (or run) the jungle trails to Jambu Longhouse, followed by a river race, paddling various sections of the Delok River. Relaxed jungle lunch and waterfall swimming deep in the rainforestl before heading by boat to the Jungle Lodge. The lodge is surrounding by thick jungle, in an area that is inhabited by a thriving population of wild orangutans. Staying here offers the chance to spot local wildlife and enjoy the clear cooling waters of the adjacent Lalang River. Dinner and overnight at the Jungle Lodge.
Friday 31st December - Day 4 - Jungle Camp
Breakfast in camp then run / trek along jungle trails through orang utan habitat, before boarding longboats for a 30-minute ride on the upper Delok River. Adventurers will then build their own rainforest camp for the night deep in the jungle. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Semikai Eli.
Saturday 1st January - Day 5 Iban Tribal Learning - Fish and Forge (B/L/D)
After breakfast the participants will learn how the Iban survive at the fringes of the rainforest. The morning will be spent fishing or foraging with the Iban with the goal of finding enough food for lunch. The group will be spilt into small ‘hunter gatherer’ parties. Some will go in search of paku (jungle ferns), bamboo shoots and other edible jungle products found near the river. Others will fish for prawns in the small streams or set up fish traps in the Delok River. Another group will use traditional jala (throw nets) to fish whilst some will be assigned to collect firewood. Afternoon, time to relax, swim and local treks in search of orangutans which are sometimes sighted in this area. Dinner and overnight at Semikai Eli.
Sunday 2nd January - Day 6 Lubok Kasai – Rafting – Nanga Sumpa
After breakfast, travel by longboat to meet your appointed Iban helpers for building of bamboo rafts, before heading downriver to Jambu longhouse. Meet the Iban at Jambu and enjoy a glass or tuak or rice wine. Then proceed by longboat to Nanga Sumpa.
Monday 3rd January - Day 7 Kuching – Gala Dinner
Depart the lodge after breakfast, say goodbye to your Iban friends and proceed downriver and overland back to Kuching. In the evening, we will reward you with a Gala Dinner & Award Ceremony at hotel.
Tuesday 4th January - Day 8
Pick up from the hotel for a transfer to the airport for your departure flight. Pick-ups will take place at various times of the day.
